What are the requirements for membership at Calvary?
Individuals who are trusting in Christ for their salvation and been baptized by immersion are welcomed into church membership. We also ask those who request church membership to complete our Starting Point membership orientation class.
When I am ready to join the church, what do I do first?
There are several ways to begin the membership process. You can talk with one of our pastors or Prayer Partners at the end of a worship service, you can attend a Starting Point class, or you can download the My Next Membership form from here.. Completing this form and returning it to the church office lets us know that you want to begin the membership process.
What kinds of questions will I be asked?
A church family is made up of individuals who have repented of their sin and placed their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. So one question we ask is, “Tell me when you came to know Christ as your Savior.” Not everyone can point to a specific date and time but each person should be able to give testimony that they are trusting in the gospel of Christ for their salvation.
Another question we will ask is, “Tell me when you were baptized by immersion.” Again, not everyone can recall the exact date when they were baptized (and we do not ask to see an person’s baptism certificate), but each person should be able to give testimony to the fact that they have followed the Lord in believer’s baptism by immersion.
Will I have to be baptized to become a member?
Not if you were previously baptized by immersion as a believer. For more information on believer’s baptism, you can read the articles available at here.. If you are unsure, any one of our pastors would be glad to talk with you.
Why do you require everyone go through Starting Point?
The Starting Point membership class is an opportunity for prospective members to get to know us better. We want to make everyone who joins our church understand our vision, mission, and beliefs. One can complete Starting Point through the regularly offered class or by making an appointment with one of our pastors. For the class schedule and to register for the class, please click here..
Do children join the same as adults?
The process for children who desire membership is similar to that for the adults. One difference is that we ask children (grades 1-5) to attend the Children’s First Steps class in lieu of the Starting Point class and before being baptized. (Visit here for more information.) Students in grades 6-12 can attend either the regular Starting Point class or a Starting Point class offered by our Student Ministries staff.
If I am a member of another church, do I need to notify them that I am joining Calvary?
No. We will contact your former church and let them know that you are joining Calvary.
If I am living in Winston-Salem temporarily and want to be part of Calvary but I don’t want to move my membership from my home church, what should I do?
Calvary has lots of individuals who attend, worship, grow and serve at Calvary as their “church away from home.” We would encourage you to join one of our discipleship groups and find your place of ministry while you are with us.
What happens next?
Once you have completed the My Next membership form requesting church membership, attended the Starting Point class and been baptized (if needed), then you will be voted into membership at our next Quarterly Family Conference. In the meantime, we would encourage you to find a discipleship group and a serving team where you can become further engaged in the life of this church.
