With great joy and excitement, Calvary Baptist Church would like to announce that on June 21, 2020, its members overwhelmingly affirmed the call of Will Toburen to be the next Senior Pastor.
ABOUT PASTOR WILL
Will Toburen was born in Ogden, Utah in 1971 to Rick and Donna Toburen. Will has three siblings, Toby, Mark, and Erin. While stationed at Hill Air Force Base during the Vietnam War, Rick and Donna were led to Christ and discipled by Bill Fulton, an Air Force chaplain. Upon completing their military service, the Toburens moved back to North Carolina, eventually landing in Winston-Salem, where they became faithful members of Calvary Baptist Church.
Some of Will’s earliest childhood memories at Calvary include participating in worship services, Sunday School, VBS, and Royal Ambassadors. As a nine year old boy, sitting under the preaching of Dr. Mark Corts, Will surrendered his life to Christ and was baptized shortly thereafter. Through his middle school and high school years, Will continued to grow spiritually through active involvement in Calvary’s student ministry while also pursuing his love for competitive swimming.
After graduating from North Forsyth High School in 1989, Will went on to attend North Carolina State University as a scholarship athlete in swimming and earned an undergraduate degree in Business Administration. During the first week of practice his freshman year, Will was introduced to his future wife, Julie, who was also a varsity swimmer. Julie was recruited to NC State from Anderson, Indiana where she was born and raised. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Business Administration, she went on to earn her Masters in Sports Administration from Ohio University. Julie has spent the last twenty years working as a corporate event planner for a Winston-Salem based company.
While on break each summer, Will worked as a swim coach where a desire to invest in the spiritual lives of middle and high school students began to grow. During his senior year, Will began to sense God leading him to consider full time ministry following graduation. After graduating in the summer of 1993, and following the guidance of trusted counselors, Will applied to serve as a Student Ministry intern at Calvary, under the leadership of Truett Williams. Upon completing his internship, and with the affirmation of church leaders, Will began his studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he eventually graduated with a Master of Arts in Religious Education in 1997.
Will and Julie were married in 1994 and moved to Charlotte, NC. While attending seminary, Will joined the staff of Hickory Grove Baptist Church where he worked with both the high school and college ministries for a little over two years. In January 1997, Will and Julie moved back to Winston-Salem, where Will rejoined the Student Ministry staff at Calvary focusing primarily on reaching and discipling middle school students. For the next six years Will partnered with Truett Williams serving students and their families.
In 2003, working with Calvary’s new Senior Pastor, Al Gilbert, Will transitioned roles and began providing teaching and organizational leadership to the newly established Elevate services. Additionally, Will started working with Calvary’s college, young professionals, and internship ministries. As Calvary continued to grow through this season, church leadership began exploring the possibility of opening an additional campus in Davie County. Will served as part of a team that helped launch Calvary West in the spring of 2009. From 2009 to 2013, Will served as the primary preacher at Calvary West while also providing organizational oversight to the Calvary West staff team.
In April 2013, Will and Julie made the difficult decision to respond to a call to serve as the Executive Pastor for Discipleship Ministries at The Summit Church in Durham, NC. Serving in this capacity for the last seven years, Will has had the opportunity to lead an incredible team responsible for setting the vision and strategy for the Summit’s discipleship ministries that range from birth through adult ministries, and include the Summit’s counseling initiatives. In addition to these responsibilities Will has the privilege of serving as a part of the Summit’s preaching team.
Will is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Ministry with a concentration in Pastoral Leadership from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Will and Julie have four wonderful children. Abby (21), is a senior nursing student at The University of South Carolina. Jackson (18), is an incoming freshman at North Carolina State University where he will study Computer Science and Engineering. Blake (13), will be a freshman in high school and loves all things sports. Alex (11), is a rising 6th grader and loves spending time with his family. As a family the Toburen’s enjoy traveling, watching movies, playing games, hiking, and just being together.
